The Lion and the Jewel is a book written by a Nigerian writer, Woye soyinka. The importance of the book is to explain the clash of culture between the western culture and that of the African culture . Lakunle being the village teacher is used to represent the western culture. He is an antagonist against the African culture,an example is seen at the starting of the book where he condems the African culture . Lakunle describes the African traditions practised at Ilujinle as archiac and barbaric . Infact , even the way the writer presents Lakunle tells us that he is indeed full of the Western culture .
Furthermore , the writer presents Baroka as a typical African representing the African culture .Baroka who is refered to as the Bale is seen practising a famous African practice , which is polygamy. The writer tells us that Baroka is always in the quest of marrying new wife . Thus , he is always in conflict with Lakunle for Sidi .
In conclusion, the Arican culture which is represented by Baroka surfaces the Western culture which is represented by Lakunle .This is manifested in Barako's victory over Lakunle in marrying Sidi .
